Summer Sundays at Sew Easy

We hope you’re all keeping cool as the gorgeous weather continues!

We wanted to let you know about a great new workshop program we’re starting up in July, Summer Sundays at Sew Easy!  Summer Sundays at Sew Easy is going to provide you with a new workshop EVERY Sunday starting at 1pm through July and August. We’ve laid out the schedule below, please pre-register with us either in person, phone, email, on Facebook or Ravelry.  Payment must be made by the Friday before the workshop.

We would also invite feedback about workshop dates and times.  While it’s impossible to have a time that fits for everyone, we would love to be able to schedule workshops that work for as many people as possible so please let us know if you’re interested in a class but the date doesn’t work for you! If there are a few people with the same interest we can often reschedule or run another class for a time that works for your group.

November 11 Hours

Sew Easy will be open from Noon to Four for your after-the-cenotaph shopping. See you there!

Happy November. Love that extra hour today!

I’m off to the store for the Sunday noon to four shift. Will any knitters gather with their projects? There are a lot of knitting needles waiting to be put away. That should be fun! It’s so sunny and beautiful out, but maybe knitters will want to gather anyway!

Summer Crafts: Rug Hooking Project

Rug hooking has always been a fun and easy project for almost anyone. Even grandfathers can do a mean hooked rug for a great handmade gift.

Age: 10+
No experience required.
Time: 4 hours and up
Materials list: ?
You?re probably not ready to rough out your own design on burlap just yet, but we?ve got some great kits in the Sew Easy store in Sechelt. $23.99 includes everything you need to make your first rug-hooked project.?

VIDEO TUTORIAL FROM Herrschners on Youtube:

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Open up your grid. Each grid square is 10×10 rug hooks.
  • Open up your pattern. Your yarn is pre-cut and matches the legend on the pattern.
  • Take a piece of your yarn and fold it around the latch hook with the little lever open.
  • Hold your yard with your opposite hand to keep it taut.
  • Push the latch hook through the hole in your grid, all the way so the little lever has gone all the way through. You?re going to pull it back through with the yarn crossing over the hook below the lever, in between the lever and the hook. When the hook draws through it closes itself and pulls the yarn through in a neat knot.

A more advanced finish:

To finish your edge you can roll it over and whip stitch it with some rug thread and a needle, or you can use iron-on binding to seal it.

Plastic Loom Scarf Knitting Project

Learn how to create a scarf using an inexpensive plastic loom. The tutorial host in the third video is amazing – very well spoken without ums and ahhs, this young person is going far!

Age 10+
Beginner knitting
Materials list:
This project can be done just with a pair of knitting needles or using one of the Spool or Loom kits we have in the store. Choose from our wide yarn selection for style and colours.

Go to approximately 2:00 for the tutorial to start. A bit blurry in places but you get the idea.

This one goes over the basics, and includes hats and scarves, and how to use inexpensive/thin yarn on your loom.

Casting on to the loom and getting started with a ruffled yarn. Good camera angle and instructions for widths.

Fingerless Gloves Knitting Project

Age: 12+
Basic Knitting Experience
Materials list:?This great little boxed craft is in the store, ready to go in a couple of colours. Each box has all the yarn you?ll need to make a pair of fingerless gloves, and the full instructions. At only $15 it?s a great easy-to-do affordable knitting project.

Fingerless Gloves boxed project set Sew Easy Sechelt

Or you can come on in and pick out your own yarn from our huge selection!

They?re great for the fall and the start of school. The combination of stitches separates these gloves from most other patterns. It takes a bit of extra work, but they?re beautiful when complete and well worth the effort.

Make sure to send us a picture of your gloves in action.

Crafts: Blanket Stitch Embroidery iPod Headphone Cord

If your house is like ours, there are at least five pairs of headphones in it and they are all white. Stop the fighting over headphone cables by customizing them with wool or embroidery thread!

Age: 10+
Time: 1-2 hours
Materials:?
Plan on buying 3-4 skeins of embroidery thread at $.99/ea.?Beads: customize with beads or buttons. We have a selection in-store and Sunstone Beads on Cowrie Street has some inexpensive starter beads right up to beautiful signature beads if you?re making them as a gift for grown ups!

Set up each ear bud as a separate wrapping project. You can also put a band of black or alternate coloured floss in the middle of the right earbud so you can easily see at a glance which is left and right.

BASIC PATTERN FOR HEADPHONE CORDS

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Tape your headphone jack end of the cord down on to a board, book or table to keep it still.
  • Find the middle point of your first skein and slide it up under the headphone cord up to the top where it is taped.
  • Right handed: start from the right (left handers do it opposite)
  • Slide the right side of the floss under the headphones and take it over the other side of the embroidery floss
  • Then take the left side of the floss and cross it over the top of the headphone cord and pull it through the loop made by the right side
  • Pull it from both sides to make it taut, and then just gently pull it up to the top

REPEAT.

  • If the knot begins to twist, swap the right and left and follow the same method as before.
  • When you reach the divider for the ear buds, double knot at the end by the divider and cut the floss.

*To add beads, just loop them through the end of the line wherever you want them to be included.
